The Freedom of Truth

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

“What is truth?” It’s the question that I asked to each and every student throughout my tenure of teaching safety in the Oil and Gas industry. While each answer differed according to the students belief, there was always one theme that was consistent and that was, “truth is something that is unchangeable and unbending.”

Webster’s dictionary states that truth is, “sincerity in action, character, and utterance; the facts” History proves to us that throughout time, humanity has tried to define and redefine the meaning of what truth actually is in order to fit its society.

Proverbs 23:23 instructs us to buy the truth and sell it not. To buy something means that you are investing in your purchase, just as with the man who found the treasure in the field. He sold everything he had just to purchase the field. It wasn’t a purchase made just for a portion of dirt; rather it was for what was inside of the dirt.

John 8:31-32 states, “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on Him, ‘If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’”

For those who followed Jesus, He gave them instructions. If they continued in His word, then they would be his disciples. And because of their knowledge of the word, and their commitment to the word, then they would know its truth and it would make them free.

We have been called according to His purpose, and that purpose is to reach this world with His gospel. We cannot allow the gospel to be defined by our culture, rather we must define culture by the gospel. Each day we pass people on our job, in our schools and in stores who are searching for the meaning of truth. They are searching for the missing piece in their life.

If we are going to be able to present truth, then we must know truth. A very good friend of mine has always said, “If you cannot present the gospel simply, then you simply do not know the gospel.” We must be ready at all times to give an account to anyone who would ask. This great gospel cannot be altered, it cannot be changed. Rather, it is simply the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Rev Nathan Hulsman
