CAN A MAN FORGIVE SIN?

Men have been searching for thousands of years for the meaning of life and for peace with God. And for thousands of years the Bible has been proclaiming, “Your iniquities (injustices) have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” Isaiah 59:2.

Sin robs a man of peace and right standing with a holy and righteous God. Since “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), all are separated from God and need to be brought back to Him.

Millions have tried to find peace with God through religious systems and philosophies. Their search is to no profit. Many have been deceived into believing that their sins can be forgiven by making sacrifices and confessing their sins to another man, who in turn will intercede with God for them.

Let us see what the Holy Bible, God’s Word, has to say concerning the forgiveness of sin.

“In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure….And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins” Hebrews 10:6, 11.

Only God can forgive sin. How then can any man receive forgiveness? How is it possible for him to approach God to make his cry for forgiveness heard? The unholy man cannot stand in the presence of the Holy God.

God had a plan made before the foundation of the world by which man could be brought back to Him. This plan was made plain through the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God. Jesus lived a sinless life in our sinful world. Because He was perfect and sinless He became our “go between,” between God and us. Jesus Christ is the only way, the only door to heaven.

The Word of God says, “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest came us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself” Hebrews 7:25-27.

The only judgment that a Holy God can place on sin is death. Sin cannot go unpunished in His presence. Jesus, understanding this, stood in our place. The sinless Christ gave His life to answer the just penalty of sin. He bore our sins in His own body on the cross. He has paid the price for our sins. This is why, when we sin, our sin is against Him; and only He can forgive us.

Christ died for our sins, for the simple reason that we cannot make an acceptable sacrifice for ourselves. To claim that we can secure God’s favor by our own efforts, or the efforts of any other man, is an insult to Jesus Christ. It is the same as saying that we can manage without Him; He really need not have bothered to die. His death would have been in vain.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all…” I Timothy 2:5, 6.

We need no other sacrifice and no other mediator. Jesus left nothing undone. How can we benefit from what Jesus has done for us?

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” I John 1:9.

The Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God who lived among men and gave His life for His brothers, is now exalted above all. He is the center of our salvation. He is our hope. There is no other.

The Lord Jesus will forgive your sins, no matter how wicked and despised you may be. He has already paid the price. The cost has been met. He has purchased a new life for you. Listen to these words, “Repent, (confess your sins, calling upon God) and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call” Acts 2:38, 39.

Jesus Christ will forgive your sins. Call on Him!
